'The Vintage Arcade' at Bluecoat Chambers
Whilst Liverpool is already rich in showing off its 20th century heritage, ‘The Vintage Arcade’ aims to explore an area of Britain’s heritage that has been previously untouched in this city.
‘Penny arcades’ became popular across British towns, cities and in particular seaside resorts during the early 20th century and stayed popular until the 1970s until they were replaced with video game arcades. The Vintage Arcade aims to capture the magic of these penny arcades with a replica of the experience that was a common pastime for both children and adults during the last century.
The Vintage Arcade acts as a both a museum and also a working arcade with original arcade machines dating back to the turn of the 20th century to the later machines that John, Paul, George and rest of The Quarrymen would of played at the end of the 1950s, all of which are in working condition.
Original working order: A selection of machines at The Vintage Arcade at Liverpool, all machines work off 1960s pennies.
The experience is given authenticity by the fact that all of the machine’s work as they would have when they were in their original arcades. The coins that you use to operate the machines are old 1960s English pennies which you buy whilst you are there from the ‘change counter’, a feature also familiar to anybody who visited a penny arcade during the 20th century. The selection of machines comes from the owner's person lifetime collection and the machines in the arcade have been picked especially for The Vintage Arcade.
Retro: The Vintage Arcade gives off a retro vibe, perfect for sharing on social network sites such as 'Instagram'.
With the current trend of smartphone applications such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook taking advantage of people’s love affair with 'retro' with their dated camera filters, The Vintage Arcade gives you a brilliant opportunity to throw yourself back into a 20th pastime, giving you a brilliant photo opportunity and gives you the chance to do something different and have fun doing so.
